Minnesota Literacy Day at the Capitol 2023

Join Minnesota’s Literacy Advocates and Raise your Voice in Support of the Read Act!

Minnesota Literacy Day at the Capitol is a family-friendly event for adults, students, educators, and professionals from around the state. We will gather at the Capitol to raise awareness for the Science of Reading and inform policymakers about best practices for struggling readers and all students learning to read. This is an excellent opportunity for children (and all participants) to see government in action and to have their voices heard.

The agenda:

9:45 AM – Arrive and get ready for a photo with Governor Walz!
10:00 AM - Participate in a group photo with the governor.
10:10 AM - Literacy Rally with speakers representing students, teachers, higher-ed, MN literacy advocates, state legislators, and more!
Afternoon on your own – attend meetings with your senator and representative (schedule in advance) and drop off your story & door sign

For kids:

  • Meet other students who also struggle with reading and raise your voices in unison.
  • Bring a poster for the Rally with a slogan to show your support. Examples include Childhood Has No Rewind; Equitable Education for ALL; Literacy for All; Education Equity is Racial Equity; Science of Reading for Literacy Success, Road 2 Reading, Until All Can Read, or create your own!
  • Bring two photos and fill out two Door Signs to leave with both of your legislators.
  • Looking for youth speaker volunteers: Volunteer by emailing Decoding Dyslexia Minnesota
    <[email protected]> and prepare a two-minute speech.

For families:

  • Contact your legislators: This is a pre-Rally activity that can be done anytime by phone, zoom, or email. You can also schedule a meeting for the afternoon of April 18. Find the contact info for your Senator and Representative here. Call today to schedule an appointment. Bring a copy of your story to leave with them.

  • Lunch options: The Rathskeller Café is located in the basement of the Capitol. Also, consider bringing a packed lunch.
